4 Most Common Ankle and Foot Injuries

By: Thomas T. Woods

Having a body in good working condition is taken for granted until you injure an ankle or foot. Because all of your body weight rests on these body parts, it can make for a long and difficult healing process. Most injuries occur during work-related activities, sports or home projects. Here are some of the most common injuries that happen.

  1. Ankle Sprain

The ankle has many ligaments that run through it to prevent the ankle from moving too far side to side. When a sprain happens, the ankle ligaments have been stretched too far and cause pain and swelling. With proper rest, ice, elevation and compression, most ankle sprains subside in a few days. More severe ankle and foot injuries Oregon will need to be seen by a specialist.

  1. Stress Fractures

Stress fractures can occur in the foot or ankle and can happen from an overuse injury for runners, dancers and other sports players. The repetitive movements in these activities lead to small cracks forming in the bone, which can cause severe pain. These injuries typically need to be rested for six to eight weeks to heal.

  1. Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon, which is the largest tendon in the body, runs up the back of your leg from ankle to calf. Overusing this tendon can lead to inflammation and swelling and may be due to tight calf muscles. If tendonitis flares and isn’t rested, there’s a high chance of a tendon tear.

  1. Plantar Fasciitis

The band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot and through the arch is called the fascia. When this becomes inflamed it can lead to severe pain in the heel of the foot, especially during the first steps you take after getting out of bed or out of a seated position. Many times rest, ice and stretching can help heal this injury or you may need to wear a heel pad.

Healing from an ankle or foot injury takes time and patience.
